Recipe: Natural Homemade Foaming Hand Soap
I love foaming hand soap, especially for the girls. It's easier for them to use because it spreads more readily and is easier to rinse off. We have three bathrooms (a total of five sinks) and the kitchen sink. That's six soap pumps being used at all times. I have foaming soap pumps at four of them. We are big hand washers and we go through a lot of soap.
It's easy to make your own foaming hand soap and is a fraction of the cost of buying foaming hand soap pumps or refills. Plus, it's not full of artificial chemicals and fragrances.
Normal cost of a foaming hand soap pump: $2.00 - $6.00 + tax (outrageous!)
Cost of making your own foaming hand soap: 50 cents to 70 cents per refill, depending on where you buy your ingredients.
Trader Joe's has 32 ounce bottles of Dr. Bronner's castile soap for $9.99 plus tax. A 32 ounce bottle is enough to make 32 foaming hand soap refills. If you have to buy your castile soap online its more expensive, about $5.00 more for 32 ounces, unless you buy it by the gallon on amazon than it's' about the same cost as Trader Joe's.
If you buy the cheaper non-vegetable glycerin at a pharmacy, it's even less expensive to make.
I like the nicer soap brands, like Method, because they are more natural. But, cost about $3.00 per pump plus tax. So I'm paying 1/6th of the cost of buying the Method brand by making my own. It's less than 1/10th the cost of the really fancy natural ones.
Homemade Foaming Hand Soap
1 empty foaming hand soap pump (7.5 ounces or larger)
small funnel (optional - makes it easier)
1 cup water
2 tablespoons liquid castile soap (any scent)
1 teaspoon sweet almond oil
1 teaspoon vegetable glycerin (pharmacies carry this)
3-5 drops of an essential oil (optional - my favorites are sweet orange and lavendar)
Using the funnel, add the water to a foaming hand soap pump. Add in the other ingredients, put the top on and shake well. You can also mix a big batch of this in a jar or other container and have it on hand when you need it.
That's it! Super simple and it works!

That is awesome! I wonder if I could find liquid castile soap at Walmart... We don't have a Trader Joe's or anything cool like that here.
Let me know if you're able to find it and where. You might try a health food store (if they have any close) or even buy it online.
p.s. Check at Target too. I know that they sell it online and I'm fairly certain it's in their stores. Also, grocery stores carry things like that sometimes. Just ask.
Looks very nice!
Oh good idea! I will check Target next time I am in Champaign. I will also check my grocery stores and health food store and see if I can find anything.
The Target near my house sells Dr. Bronner's in the makeup section.
I love this recipe - thanks for sharing! I made it today using grapefruit and rosemary essential oils - it smells so clean and fresh :)
I was able to get some Dr. Bronner's from our food co-op for $5.60 today.
